Common questions
When do I get paid?
1 to 2 business days after the round, via Stripe to your bank. Tips land the same way.
Can Hold My Tee cut my pay later?
No. Your $54 net per round is locked in once you're on the platform. We can't reduce it without your written consent or 60 days notice that lets you deactivate first. The commitment is in our Terms of Service, Section 6.
Am I a 1099 contractor?
Yep, you're your own boss. Set your hours, pick your courses, work when you want. If you earn over the IRS threshold for the year, you'll get a 1099 form.
Do I need to know golf?
A little. You don't need to play yourself, but you should know the basics. How holes are laid out, where shots tend to land, where to stand for the best view. If you've played a round or two, you're set.
Is there training before my first round?
Yes. Every new spotter goes through a short video orientation that covers where to walk, where to stand, and how to handle the trickier situations. You'll know what good spotting positions look like before your first round.
What should I bring?
Comfortable walking shoes, a towel to mark balls, a hat, sunglasses (helps you track balls against the sky), sunscreen, water. Your phone in case the group needs to reach you.
What do I wear?
A polo and a hat. No jeans, no shorts above the knee.
Where do I meet the group?
At the first tee, 15 minutes before their tee time. Introduce yourself, then head out ahead of them when they tee off.
What do I say when a course worker at the first tee asks who I am?
Politely introduce yourself and tell them you're with Hold My Tee and that you're spotting for [golfer's name] today at [tee time]. Send other questions to support@holdmytee.app.
Do I carry their bags?
No. Bags stay on the cart. The job is foot-only, you walk ahead and track shots.
What if they ask me to pick a club?
Politely say "I'm just here to spot shots." Don't guess. Bad advice costs them a stroke and you the tip.
What if they ask for a yardage?
If you have a rangefinder on you, call it while you're at the ball. Don't guess without one, same rule as clubs, bad info costs them a stroke and you the tip.
What if the group is drinking and offers me one?
Polite no, you're working. Water or a soda is fine.
Can I spot at any course?
Any course that's on the Hold My Tee list in your app. We work with each pro shop in advance, course by course. "Public" doesn't mean walk-on, pro shops can turn away outside spotters. Add the listed ones to your profile, and suggest any course you'd like us to reach out to.
Any course etiquette I should know?
Be friendly to the pro shop and starter when you arrive. Stay clear of other groups. Your Cheat Sheet covers how to act with your group.
What if the course pro shop has questions?
Send them our way. Point them to support@holdmytee.app and we'll handle it from there. We carry liability insurance and can send a Certificate of Insurance if they want one on file.
Self-check
Yes to all three? You're a fit.
- Can you walk 5+ miles in a single round?
- Are you comfortable hustling ahead of the group to spot shots?
- Been on a golf course before? You don't need to play well, just know what a fairway looks like.
The rest you'll learn before your first round, short video covers where to walk and where to stand.
